About LASIK refractive surgery
Refractive surgery, as its name suggests, adjusts the way your eyes refract, or bend light, by changing the shape of the cornea, which is the front surface of your eye. One of the earliest refractive surgery techniques was radial keratotomy (RK). St. Paul Eye Clinic was among the first area practices to offer laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis, or LASIK. LASIK
With LASIK, a few anesthetic drops are applied, and an eyelid holder is placed to prevent blinking. A thin flap of cornea is elevated, exposing the inner layers of the cornea. The laser is programmed precisely according to your eye’s individual “fingerprint” and accurately reshapes your cornea. The flap is then sealed back into place and the whole process is complete within just minutes. Over 98% of LASIK patients achieve between 20/20 and 20/40 vision without glasses or contacts. Of course, individual results may vary and we will never give you unrealistic expectations. Is refractive surgery right for you?
Our doctors will complete an in-depth examination to determine if you are a candidate for refractive surgery. The ideal candidate for refractive surgery is over 18 years of age with healthy eyes and without a significant change in their eyeglass prescription for the last 12 months. People with certain eye or other medical conditions and pregnant women or nursing mothers may not be good candidates for refractive surgery.

How effective is our LASIK?
According to a clinical study, one year after the VISX CustomVue procedure:
- Almost all of the study participants could pass a driving vision test without glasses or contacts.
- 98% of the clinical study participants could see 20/20 or better without glasses or contacts.
- 70% of the clinical study participants could see 20/16 or better without glasses or contacts.
