The CustomVue® LASIK procedure we offer here at St. Paul Eye Clinic is FDA-approved and widely considered to be the most effective technology available today for reducing a person’s dependence on glasses or contacts. Over 98% of LASIK patients achieve between 20/20 and 20/40 vision after the surgery, and in some cases the results are instant.

Not everyone is eligible for LASIK eye surgery, which is why our board-certified vision care specialists offer free consultations that help determine if you’re eligible. The basic qualifiers, set by the FDA, include:

·       Must be at least 18 years of age.

·       Must have healthy eyes and a stable prescription. (Prescriptions may change for some people into their mid-20’s.)

·       Prescription must be within the defined range that can be corrected with LASIK.

·       You must be in good general health. LASIK is not recommended for people with diabetes, lupus, glaucoma, or cataracts.

If you then decide that LASIK is right for you, it’s helpful to know the steps of the procedure and what to expect. The entire staff here at St. Paul Eye Clinic is dedicated to helping you feel comfortable throughout the process and can answer any questions you may have. Read on for some of the most important things to know.

“Surgery day was fast and easy—just 15 minutes. Dr. Tsai made me feel comfortable and reassured. After my LASIK procedure he asked, ‘what time is it?’ I sat up and read ‘3:00’ with no problem—it was that immediate. I wanted to cry, I was so excited!”

-Angela G., Patient of St. Paul Eye Clinic

LASIK is most commonly performed to correct nearsightedness, but can also improve farsightedness and astigmatisms as well. This is done by using a computer-controlled ultraviolet laser to reshape the cornea (clear protective layer that covers the front of the eye) to account for any irregularities. The specific changes to the cornea are different for each patient, but in general we:

·       Flatten the cornea to improve far vision.

·       Steepen the curve of the cornea to improve near vision.

·       Smooth out irregularities to improve astigmatisms.

For precise LASIK outcomes, we utilize Iris Registration, a state-of-the-art technology that tracks eye movement and provides for more specific laser alignment.

CustomVue® LASIK Procedure

Step 1: Free Eye Exam and Consultation

The first step in determining if LASIK is an option for you is by scheduling a free eye exam with one of our board-certified eye specialists. This is a no strings attached consultation to see if LASIK surgery can improve your vision.

“I never felt anything was pushed on me. It was just, let’s explore and see if it’s a good idea.”

-Angela G., Patient of St. Paul Eye Clinic

 Step 2: Procedure Preparation

If you decide LASIK is right for you, the preparation will begin with the use of eye drops to numb the eye and the placement of a lid speculum to keep you from blinking. Next, a thin layer of the cornea will be folded back to allow for the removal of corneal tissue. At this time your specialist will talk you through the procedure once again and let you know what to expect.

Step 3: Reshaping the Cornea

The actual procedure lasts just 10-15 minutes per eye and begins with the use of a computer-controlled laser to reshape the cornea. During your previous exam, our specialist will have collected all the data necessary to correct your eye, and the computer will be programed with this information to guarantee exact precision. After the cornea has been reshaped, the corneal flap will be folded down and you’ll be allowed to close and rest your eyes before leaving.

Step 4: Post-Surgery LASIK Care

Your vision will return shortly after the procedure; however, you will not be able to drive home from the clinic. You’ll then have a follow-up visit with the specialist who performed your procedure within 48 hours to make sure your eyes are healing correctly, and from then on your post-surgery recovery will include:

·       Waiting 24 hours to take a shower.

·       Refraining from rubbing and touching your eyes for at least a month.

·       Wearing sunglasses on bright days.

·       Avoiding eye make-up for a week.

·       Staying out of pools, lakes, and saunas for at least 3 weeks.

“Surgery was pretty painless and easy. The next two weeks were tougher, just remembering to do eye drops and not touch your eyes, but now I’m at 20/20 vision and everything’s been good.”

-John B., St. Paul Eye Clinic LASIK Patient
